Do this firstStop using water. All of it. A system only keeps backing up while the plumbing is still being used, so every flush and every load of laundry adds to what is already sitting there with nowhere to go.
Then call us and tell us what you are seeing. Sometimes it is a pump. Sometimes it is a line, and a truck full of vacuum will not fix it. We will tell you which one it looks like before we roll.
Look hereStart at the lowest point of the property and look for exposed concrete. These systems are gravity flow, so the sewer line always runs downhill from the house. The access port is usually a square plug, six to twelve inches across, with a rebar handle set into it.
If somebody landscaped over it, stop digging. We locate it with a camera down the line, and then we can set a riser so it comes up to grade and you never lose it again.
The real answerThere is no clean interval, and anyone who quotes you one off the top of their head is guessing. Frequency depends on how many people are in the house, what goes down the drain, and how well that particular hole still percolates into that particular ground.
What we can tell you is what yours looks like today, and roughly when it will want us again.

Almost nobody has seen their own cesspool. Pull the depth down and see what is actually under the yard, and what happens at each level.
Shallow, and usually old. A hole this size fills quickly and is the first to back up on a busy weekend, so it wants pumping on a shorter cycle than the neighbors do.
We pump it. Ask us to note the level so you have a baseline.The Maui average. If nobody has opened it in years, the layer it drains through has likely glazed over, which is why the level comes back up faster each time.

Camera location first, then pumping, then a riser to grade.No lining at all. The soil is the wall. Cheapest to dig and the most likely to take on roots or lose a wall, which is why we go carefully around the edges.
Reinforced perforated concrete rings, stacked. The perforations are the whole design, and they are also the part that eventually clogs.
Reinforced with hollow tile. Common in older builds around the island, and it usually tells us roughly how old the house is before anyone checks a permit.

Tanks, baffles and the maintenance that keeps solids from ever reaching the leach field. If something on the tank needs adjusting or replacing, we tell you first and get your say so before we touch it.
Restaurants, commercial kitchens and anywhere grease has to stop before it reaches the line. Regular scheduled cleanings, so it is never the thing that closes you for a day.
Built for the way a truck actually operates. Grey water and trap service on a route that fits around service hours instead of interrupting them.
When the system was landscaped over, paved over, or was never marked at all. The camera goes down the line and finds the access port so nobody digs a test hole in the lawn hoping to get lucky.
Brings the access port up to grade so the next service is a lid, not an excavation. Pays for itself the second time somebody has to open it.
A separate fleet with its own trucks. Our standard units take sling sets, so they hoist up a multi story build or fly into a valley by helicopter. The 4 wheel drive rig reaches the rest.

State law passed in 2017 requires cesspools statewide to be converted to a septic system or connected to sewer by 2050. That is the law, and it is not ours to argue with.
Here is our position, plainly. We are not going to sell you a conversion you were not asking about, and we are not going to use a deadline twenty four years out to talk you into work today.
What we do is keep what you have working until you decide, and tell you honestly what is actually down there when you ask. A camera look and a straight description of the construction and the condition is worth more than a sales pitch, and it is the same thing we would want if it were our house.
When you are ready to plan the conversion, you will want an engineer and a licensed installer for that part. Ask us and we will tell you what we have seen work on lots like yours.
